AVJ: PORTRAIT OF A PAMIRI VILLAGE

2019, Tajikistan, Avj

- What does Avj mean to you?

- To me it is like a piece of heaven.

- What do mountains mean to you?

- Mountains are our fortress.

[excerpt of an interview with Anais]

In summer 2019, I returned to Tajikistan to explore the relationship between Avj, a tiny village on the shore of the River Panj, its inhabitants and guests. What does the village mean to them? What are the most important places in Avj to them? What legends travel around? I believe that each inhabitant portrays the village in a way, but the village is a portrait of its inhabitants. Photographs are only a tiny part of the project, all the collected materials will be published in a book one day.
